Intermediate
In the intermediate years, our program transitions to larger concepts and gives students’ autonomy in their learning. Students learn to be responsible citizens in the community and shift from learning to read to reading to learn. The focus becomes project and inquiry based allowing students to begin to learn how to manage their own academic success.
Teaching Academic Success
From Grades 3-5, students set their academic goals and mindsets that shape their learning careers. They transition from learning concrete thinking to understanding abstract concepts, and they begin developing critical thinking skills. These are the tools that help students set themselves up for success. Teachers intentionally teach goal setting, regular self assessment, peer helping, and explaining their learning to encourage students’ ownership of their education.

Along with this, students create their own Passion Projects and discover their unique learning interests. We encourage students to pursue curiosity inside and outside through hands-on learning and field trips, including Camp Thunderbird, Royal British Columbia Museum, Tide Pool School, the Compost Education Centre, the British Columbia Legislature Buildings, and more.
Strings Program
Starting in Grade 4, all Cathedral School students have the unique opportunity to learn strings instruments. Students choose between Violin and Cello, and they perform across Victoria in our award winning Strings Ensemble.
