Memorial Hall Centennial Gala
Saturday, October 21st
One hundred years ago, construction began on Memorial Hall, at the corner of Vancouver Street and Rockland Avenue. The building served as a community gathering place and parish hall, before becoming Christ Church Cathedral School in 1989.
On October 21st, Christ Church Cathedral and the Cathedral School will recognize the past and celebrate a promising future at the Memorial Hall Centennial Gala. The evening will feature an elegant dinner, musical entertainment and VIP speakers including The Honourable Janet Austin, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of British Columbia, Anna Greenwood-Lee. Guests will also be able to bid on some delightful items in an auction during the dinner. All money raised will go toward the School’s new bursary fund, named in honour of the departing Head of School Stuart Hall and the Cathedral’s ministries. Gala Chair Neil MacDonald says the centennial of Memorial Hall deserved to be recognized with a special event. “It’s rare to be able to celebrate one hundred years of a building that offered so much to Victoria and the surrounding area, a building that has grown to be a centre of excellence for spiritually focused education.”
History:
Memorial Hall was built on the traditional territory of the Lekwungen People, known today as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. The Hudson’s Bay Company, which had been given title to Vancouver Island for ten years in 1849, “gifted” the land to the Church of England. Memorial Hall also sits on land bought privately by the Church. The Hall was built to honour those who fought and died in the First World War while the auditorium was a memorial to Bishop George Hills, the first Anglican Bishop of British Columbia.
Built-in the Gothic-Revival style and designed by John Charles Malcolm Keith --the architect for the adjoining Cathedral-- Memorial Hall was completed before construction of the Cathedral began in 1926. Now the heritage building is home to the Cathedral School, an Anglican elementary and middle school that emphasizes academic excellence and social responsibility.
The evening begins at 5:30 in the gym of Memorial Hall, on Saturday, October 21st.
Tickets for the Memorial Hall Centennial Gala are $200 each which includes a $100 tax receipt.
Tables of eight are available for a discounted price of $1400 and come with a $700 tax receipt.
