‘“Lux Mundi” (The Light of the World) speaks of the Light of Christ and the light of learning, and encourages us to “bear witness of the Light” in all we undertake.’

Since its beginning, the Cathedral School has cherished an ideal of Christian education expressed in the School motto “Lux Mundi” and the integration of Christian ideals, life and worship into the daily life of the school. The express goal of the Cathedral School is also expressed in the phrase, “that every child should learn and grow in the light of Christ”
The School Chaplain has the responsibility, shared with the staff, in bringing these goals into concrete reality. Three main areas can be identified:
Within the regular curriculum, too, especially in the language arts classes, there are opportunities to include expressions of faith. An example of this occurred early in 2005, when, in response to the Tsunami disaster in South-East Asia, poems were written to express a Christian response to this time of grief. The possibilities of developing this approach are part of the ongoing evolution of the chaplaincy.

Worship: Weekly Chapel services in the Chapel of the New Jerusalem, give an experience of communal worship on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am and assemblies on Mondays and Fridays; which incorporate hymns, prayers and timely reflection upon current events from a Christian perspective. Within each classroom, prayers are offered every day.
The Chaplaincy is entering a new phase. For many years, Christ Church Cathedral clergy conducted the chapel services and the religious education classes. Recently, however, it was realized that a more continuous presence within the school was needed and that long-term planning should make provision for a chaplain who could spend substantial amounts of time each week, supporting the staff and students.
